The Sacred Ash

The ash tree (fraxinus excelsior) is a sacred tree in the pagan traditions of Europe. In particular, it is revered as the World Tree (Arbor Mundi) in northern European traditions. It is a tree that spans the worlds. It is associated with the magickal axis that extends between realms. AMG ADA is a magickal tradition especially connected to the ash - hence the Magica Fraxinus. The connections of the ash to a magick of this sort are hidden in various clues found in folklore and remnants of pagan traditions. Let us mention a few:

*In many parts of Europe leaves of the ash tree were placed under pillows at night to induce 'true dreams'.

*The ash tree is known for the strength of its shadow. It was believed that crops would not grow in the shadow of an ash. In other traditions, its shadow was regarded as having magickal powers.

*The ash tree was attributed with the power to draw lightning. It is a tree associated with 'sky fire' and with storms.

*The ash tree has a marked signature of verticality. Its twigs curl upwards. This is a sign of elevation, rapture.

*The ash tree is known as the most excellent fire wood. It burns wet or dry. It is thus regarded as having an inherent quality of 'fire', an inner fire.

*The ash tree was associated with the heiros gamus (sacred marriage) in many pagan traditions.

*The ash tree has many folk associations with the erotic. Its strongly erotic powers are signalled by the title 'Venus of the Woods'.

*The witches' broomstick (besom) was made from an ashrod. The traditions of witches 'flying' on broomsticks (between their the prophetic (visionary) powers of the ash.

All of these associations appear again in the Magica Fraxinus. The 'Living Tree' of adepts serves as the axis between worlds, the source of 'purefire' magickal energies, the witness to sacred marriage, the impetus to rapture, the source of true dreams and a magick of shadows.
